The most frequent problem is within the magnetic strip on the back of your card. It can be easily demagnetized if exposed to a magnet, strong battery (as in cell phones), speakers, radios, head phones or other bank cards. In rare cases even the remote on your car key can demagnetize the card. Demagnetization means that the magnetic strip can no longer send or receive information therefore the card “doesn’t work”.
Sometimes a portion of the strip may become scratched or damaged. In these cases, your card might work everywhere except maybe the library. This would mean that the section of the strip that is programmed for entry into the library is damaged.
If you find that your card will work to access doors but not to make bookstore purchases, copies or use the vending machines, you may have a financial hold on your account. This means that you will be able to use your dining plan and get into your dorm, but you will not be allowed to make any further charges until a payment for your account has been received.
Come by the ID Card Center office to resolve problems with your TCU card. We can re-magnetize cards, or issue you a new one if your card is too damaged to work well. We can also check your account for a financial hold.
